Managers Corner

Aug 26, 2010, 10:49 am

Last of our pre season games coming up this week end. And i must say that i am very pleased as to how they have gone. i set a challenge to play teams higher up the ladder than us and we have more than matched them. movement, passing and support play has been fantastic but my fear is against weaker teams we dont find that ability to hold shape and kill of the opposition this is the only thing we must improve on and if we do we will have a successful season. Bob's team are also producing some fantastic football and the players looking to join the squad show we have youth and tallent coming through that can only help build a successful club.

The season is almost upon us and both teams are playing in the same style which is what we want, that way we can call up any player to either squad, player for player and know that that player will know what is expected of him. I would like to welcome all the new players who have been involved in matches, and Nathan Perks the clubs first loan signing ( Frickley coll's)

The games on Saturday  were played at 11 am and 2 pm which allowed me to attend them both. the first game against Tadcaster was played at a high tempo and we were caught out with the speed of passing and movement in the first 20 mins but to every players credit we knuckled down and matched them and the draw was a good result.

second game was may be a total reverse we played at a pace that Swillington just could not cope with but a laps of concentration caught us out to go 1 - 0 down. But i was never in doubt that Bob and his squad would win and win they did 6 - 1 the only black mark of the day was the injury to Glen Shaw and we all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Great results from yesterday first time we have fielded both teams and even with a number of players missing due to injury and prior commitments, both teams came away with wins. Very pleasing against teams who are competing in higher leagues and also in the 1/4 finals of the prostar cup. The tests will get harder as some of our next games are against premier and south American opposition. For the first time Chilean team Vina Del Mar will play Pontefract FC in their pre season tour of Europe.

Well done but we must keep the momentum going as the season will be on us before we know.

Closer game than last week which has given both bob and me some things to work on.But on a positive note club's first win over Monk Fryston in 7 games and in the squad of 16 we had 6 17 year old's and 1 16 year old. A good game to blood young players and goals for 17 year old's  Brynn and Adam on their first outing for the club.

Due to our success against Knaresborough Celtic on the 17th i am going to have to make the pre season games more difficult. this was a good result against a Harrogate and district premier side.but we must not get ahead of ourselves as we have to put those kind of preformances in on a regular basis.

I would also like to welcome Bob Foster to the coaching staff, his addition to the club will be invaluable. This again is another step in the right direction for the club.

well done all

training is going well we have had 42 players attending which is good. the attitude of all is fantastic all we need to do is put the hard work in to our games and get the results.

first big test is Knaresborough celtic this coming Saturday they were promoted to the Harrogate and district premier last season finishing 2nd. all our pre season games are against higher league opposition which will push us in the direction we want to go in.

pre season has started.

My aim is to get our squad of players fit during the pre season, this is the bad part but a necessary part of your forth coming season. To help me sort out the Selby & Wakefield squads we have set up a number of fixtures. The first 2 will be against our selves then against Knaresborough celtic, Boston spartan's, Wrenthorpe, barwick and Stanley.

To start with the sessions will be hard but as fitness improves things will get more technical, ball work, fazes of play, movement on and of the ball and formations of play. The club will be challenging on 6 fronts to win silver ware. And the clubs aim is to be successful on at least 1.

I will be bringing in a coaching team to organize coaching sessions and match days.

yours

Iain.
